Hello there! Today’s post is rather blunt! I’ve spent a little over 15 years of my career in industrial maintenance management and there is one ideology that can be lived by:

Proper Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance!  The 6 p’s of industrial maintenance apply to ALL situations, and it has many inputs that cause failure! For example:

1.        If the entire organization doesn’t buy-in to an organized maintenance process.

2.        If operations management has no regard for the need for preventative maintenance & planned downtime.

3.        If the maintenance planner is firefighting today instead of planning work for at least 2 weeks or more in the future.

4.        If the highly trained & paid maintenance technician has a low wrench-time or is working too much on non-value-added tasks.

5.        If one key person in an organization insists on controlling too much.

6.        If the storeroom is poorly stocked due to a poorly executed MRO system.

I could go on, but from my experience and observations these 6 points account for +/-90% of the organizational breakdowns in any manufacturing environment. It is widely accepted and documented that the typical unplanned maintenance job/work order costs 3-5 times more than a planned job/work order. Maintenance planning directly affects profits, for better or worse!
